Auparavant voici quelques mots sur son auteur.
On peut dire qu'entre 1910-1930 il n'y a aucun chercheur anglophone qui connaît aussi bien l'Aurès que Melville William HILTON-SIMPSON. Disons tout simplement qu'il était l'équivalent de MASQUERAY pour les francophones des décennies précédentes.
À l'instar de ce dernier, il a séjourné, avec sa femme, plus de trois ans dans la région auresienne : 1912-1913, 1913-1914, 1919-1920 et enfin un quatrième séjour durant 1923-1924 consacré à la réalisation dun film sur la même région.
Ses recherches ethnologiques et anthropologiques en Aurès ont abouti à la publication de plusieurs livres ainsi qu'une quinzaine d'articles sur la médecine, l'agriculture, les coutumes et mode de vie des Chaouis. En outre, il a ligué une volumineuse collection de photos, sur la région aurèsienne, au Royal Anthropological Institute (incluant celles qui sont reproduites dans ces livres et articles), et une autre collection de produits artisanaux chaouis au musée Pitt Rivers dOxford.
